Tritanium. Something for me?

Tritanium. Something for me?

Among the students in Groningen many are enthusiastic about endurance sports (swimming, running, cycling, speed-skating and rowing) which can also be seen in the number of student sport clubs in these sports. Our members are frequently already a member of one of the other endurance sport clubs and want to try out another sport, or combine them. Naturally those students that already have participated in triathlon in high-school automatically become a member of our club.

Next to these students which are experienced endurance athletes, more and more students without a triathlon/endurance sport history are joining Tritanium. Joining in is possible at all times during the year, also through the beginners-course in period 4 (beginning around the 21st of April) which is organized by the ACLO.

Recently a movie about Tritanium and the way we train/compete was made.

Why triathlon, of all sports?

Sometimes you come across triathlon purely by accident, or because you e.g. already swim and run but have never considered combining these sports, and joining a club for multi-sports. Or you notice that you are just involved in a single-activity and are looking for a broader range of sports.

The most mentioned reasons for starting with triathlon are the following:

- Triathlon is a sport for “diehards”, an enormous challenge.

People that are just beginning with triathlon, learn to cope with the feeling that not everything is easily learned or done. But after a year, there is usually a lot of evidence that one has progressed. Participating in sports gives a good feeling, your self-confidence improves, and your perseverance improves. All this is also noticeable in your studies. You will begin to train at least 3 times a week, but this will at some point just become perfectly normal.

- The same sport every day/week gets boring...

Some members of therefore also members of Tjas (speed-skating), GSAC (climbing), Tandje Hoger (cycling) etc.! Triathlon is not just three apart sports, but the switch from just swimming, running and cycling most of the time already happens in the first year of being a member of Tritanium. Then you will start seeing triathlon- the combined sport, as a fourth sport/discipline, which cannot be compared to the other sports.

- It is addicting.

As mentioned above, you automatically begin to aim higher and higher. You automatically keep training and training, and this gives an enormous kick and then….you are addicted. This makes triathlon the healthiest addiction that exists. As weird as it may sounds, research has proven that the addiction-rate among triathletes is higher than that of athletes from any other sport.

- You can drink more beer

Being a member of a sports club does not mean that one only trains, but social activities are also what makes a student sports-club so special. The nice thing about triathlon is that you can combine your social life and drinking large amounts of beer with keeping in excellent shape, as you will never start looking like a “sport-drinker”.

- Your concentration improves

After exercising in the evening, you can continue studying with higher concentration- therefore an extreme study-day could consist of studying in the UB, swimming break, again studying in the UB, in the evening cycling/running and again studying till its bedtime. Weirdly enough studying improves through being physically tired

Triathlon is sometimes a calling, but always and for everyone it is a challenge. It is a great feeling to finish a triathlon! Tritanium offers space and training possibilities for hobby athletes or dedicated competitive athletes, through its 3 trainings offered on week-nights. One night is spent swimming, one cycling and the other running. There is also an ACLO course lasting ten weeks which prepares interested students for a sprint triathlon. We are challenging you!!
